Finally light at the end of the tunnel? (by Klaus Gheri)

Looks like the economy is finally getting better again.
Haven't we all heard the good news lately if not even personally experienced convincing evidence thereof in our own work environment.
While this may be true for the financial services and other sectors like our own the hideous interplay of reduced consumer spending and larger unemployment will not go away that quickly.

Employees with reduced wages and dreading to be laid off any time don't make great allies when it comes to improving corporate security.
As unpleasant as it may be but opportunity and even more so despair make thieves.
With outrageous top level management compensation schemes constantly being a prime news topic and fueling anger and frustration within the work force, some will find it more than appropriate to try to get their own fair slice of the corporate cake.

Thus as the old German saying goes - trust is good but control is even better - beware of the enemy on the inside.
People with substantial criminal intent are not deterred by awareness campaigns.
Tangible technical security measures within the network and on the employee's desktop may not be ultimately effective against a highly motivated and skilled attacker - but in practise the disgruntled amateur driven by opportunity is more common.
These folks respond to signs of effective security controls as these insinuate a much larger risk of getting caught.

So don't get carried away to easily, securitywise there is not that much light at the end of the tunnel.
The good news is however that the security problems are much easier and cheaper to address than the rest of the crisis.
